THEME: Early Acoustic Blues, Ragtime and ‘Hot Jazz’

We are thrilled to welcome back to Bude by popular demand the exceptionally talented bluesman, Adam Franklin to teach acoustic blues in his inimitable way.  Learn essential finger picking techniques from the ‘cool blues’ of players such as Mississippi John Hurt and Memphis Minnie, then on to the exciting ragtime style of players such as, Blind Boy Fuller and Big Bill Broonzy.
Throughout the weekend students will cover basic techniques while learning ‘classic acoustic blues’, ‘ragtime’ and ‘hot jazz’ tunes. From the original Chicago blues of the 1920’s, then down the east coast to find the alternate thumb style known as ‘Piedmont’.
Techniques covered will include; ‘Thumb Rolls’, ‘Moving bass line’, ‘Chord inversions’, ‘Diminished chord runs’, and more.
The main course of the weekend will be standard tuning, although some time will be set aside for open tunings. A diverse range of early American musicians used open tunings without a slide to great effect.

Adam Franklin has extensively explored the pre-war American songbook.  and will show you all the tools and techniques essential to playing these early blues styles.
